perpetual retrospective

Kevin James

each moment a revelation
a candle set ablaze
immanence & transcendence
ignite the real and its fiction
illuminating worlds
in memoriam for
past presents,
instants too brief for
a proper burial, where
epitaphs & homilies are
already dead on arrival.

this niche
enfolding flames
dancing with their shadows
the others of itself
for better or
for worse,
in stillness
in repose…
light upon light
consummated in darkness
silent awakenings before
sounds reach tongues
gathering composures
sharing gravitational pulls
ebbing and flowing
gently caressing moonbeams
transfixed by stars
above multiple horizons.

Kevin James: “I am a retired New York City (FDNY) firefighter and decorated arson investigator who was one of several Muslim Americans profiled in the PBS documentary Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet. I was accepted into the Revson Fellows program at Columbia University where I participated in Columbia's 9/11 Oral History Project and later graduated from Columbia Law School as a Stone Scholar. As a law school intern I assisted the Center for Constitutional Rights file suit against the FDNY for discriminatory hiring practices. My commentary has been published in The Islamic Monthly, Black Commentator, Sisyphus, Write Launch and Dreamers Creative Writing while my poetry has been published or is pending publication in The Tahoma Literary Review, Into the Void, Griffel, Beyond Words Literary and The Sixty-Four Best Poets of 2018 (Black Mountain Press).”
